After retiring in 1999 from 32 years teaching Philosophy at the University of Saskatchewan, Ed Thompson began to sculpt in the year 2001. We worked for four years on portrait busts with Hans Holtkamp. In 2005, he co-founded a group, "the Gang of Five", to meet bi-weekly and hire models for doing figure sculpting, which lasted about two years. Until recently, his main medium has been clay and plasticine, and he has mainly done figurative, more or less "realistic", work. He has also made rubber molds and plaster casts; and has just contracted to have a recent work bronzed. In 2007 – 10, he took nine sculpture classes from USCAD, five of them welding-sculpture, working with the instructor, Les Potter, in which he also gained some experience in stone-carving, assembly, welding, and more abstract, expressive, and fantastic forms. He has exhibited works in nine or ten group shows, mostly those sponsored by the Prairie Sculptors Association, of which he is an eight-year member. He just finished a course in "Two-dimensional Design" under Alicia Popoff, which he plans to follow-up with more "painting" classes.
