ARTIST STATEMENT
Zach works in high-fired translucent porcelain. He is interested in the dichotomy of rural and city; nature and industry. He uses iconic imagery to explore these themes. He is influences are as diverse as Ceramic traditions (such as Japanese tea bowls and Scandinavian ceramics), Minimalist Architecture, and street graffiti.
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
The pieces are thrown on a potter's wheel very thinly, to accentuate the translucency of the porcelain. The bottoms are trimmed when the pieces are leather hard. Then the images are applied by brushing coloured slip through hand drawn and cut paper stencils. Each one is unique. Sometimes carving is done on the piece at this stage, before the pot dries completely, this creates more subtle texture in the clay. Next, the pieces are dried carefully, and then bisqued in an electric kiln. Then they are glazed and fired again to cone 10.
STUDIO
Zach shares his studio with his wife and daughter. The space is a covered in veranda in their small 1914 house in Maple Creek, SK. The space is 8' wide and 20' long. The floor was rotting when they moved is in 2007, and Zach rebuilt the floor with hardwood salvaged from a school gym. Zach is inspired by the small private space and its' blue Northern light. Elsa, who is almost 1 1/2, also enjoys being in the studio.
