Bob Kelly moved to Saskatoon from Inuvik six years ago. He was born in the Interior of B.C. in a small community called Spences Bridge. Being of aboriginal descent, his father, coast Salish (North Vanc.) and his mother Interior Salish, he was brought up in an environment with handiwork hanging from the walls of the house; woven cedar baskets, drums, dipnets for salmon fishing, deer hide sewn for shoes. These handmade household items have shaped his concept and approach to craft.
For the past fifteen years he has worked in stone, soapstone primarily. He spent three and a half years in the high arctic, where he learned from an Inuit-Danish carver, Jonas Faber. He mainly have learned through working with other carvers under the sky. He takes inspiration from what has gone before. He has participated in The Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik, and exhibited at Wanaskewan in Saskatchewan as well as various galleries in Vancouver and in the rest of the B.C. province. |
