I was born and raised on the bald prairie, so mountain landscapes were pretty much out of the question. In spite of a recent streak without pets, I love animals, and I definitely let this show in some of my pieces. Mostly, take my work at face value: if you see a cat, it's a cat, and I hope to heck you like that cat. I do have a habit of letting my sense of humor shine through. There is no happier moment for me as an artist when my work elicits a grin or a chuckle. It's meant to be fun and positive.
With stone, my creative process is both elementary and elemental: first, and most importantly... I take a rock. Next, I look at that rock, and leave it alone until I see a shape, a face, or a design.
Then, I attack it with every tool at my disposal. Stone is a symphony of subtraction, of taking away every grain that gets in the way of my mind's eye. But metal waits for me to expand it.
With metal, instead of deciding what to take away, I'm left with the ofttimes more challenging conundrum of what to add, and when to stop. Metal allows me to concentrate on sharp shapes, smooth curves, and lines. I revel in the smoothness and detail of stone as well. Hence, I really rely on both mediums to fully spill the ever-overflowing bucket of images that come to me.
I've recently done some wall murals, and hope to explore that avenue a little more. In August 2009, I received my Certificate of Art and Design from the University of Saskatchewan, and will be returning to take more courses to further expand my artistic horizons. |
