Mel Genge moved to Saskatoon in 1960. He grew up in Newfoundland with family of carpenters and boat builders. He has always had a passion for making things out of wood, and in 2000, shortly after retiring as a manager at Safeway; he began to pursue his passion. He favours Manitoba maple wood, and likes to incorporate salvaged materials into his useful creations, such as his pepper grinders and pens, and his more artistic lathe turned wood bowls. He is self taught, but has taken numerous classes offered through the Saskatchewan Wood Workers Guild, for which he is the Co-Chair, of the Wood Turners Symposium. He is an active member of the wood turning community, and frequently participates in charity events. He crafts mostly for the fun of it, and loves to share his pieces with family and friends.
